What is Stigma

Stigma is when someone views you in a negative way because you have a distinguishing characteristic or personal trait that’s thought to be, or actually is, a disadvantage (a negative stereotype).

The definition of stigma is “a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person.” In the context of mental health, stigma refers to the negative attitudes and beliefs that society has about mental illness. These attitudes often lead to discrimination and social exclusion for those living with a mental illness.

How stigma can negatively affect those living with a mental illness?

The stigma surrounding mental health has a negative influence on many different aspects of life for someone affected by a mental illness. There have been cases where stigma has prevented someone from seeking the treatment they need, whether it’s due to not wanting to be seen as weak by others or because they feel embarrassed. Stigma can also lead people to avoid talking about their mental health concerns with friends and family members, which can cause them to become alienated or isolated.

Ways to reduce stigma attached to mental health

The best way to show that stigma doesn’t affect your opinion of someone living with a mental illness is simply by talking about it! This could be done through coworkers, social media, family members, friends, etc. Everyone has an important role in creating awareness for stigma within our society; all you have to do is start the conversation! No matter how small your contribution may seem, it will make a difference.
